Numismatics (Latin: numisma, nomisma, "coin"; from the Greek: νομίζειν nomízein, "to use according to law") is the study or collection of currency, including coins, tokens, paper money, and related objects. While numismatists are often characterized as students or collectors of coins, the discipline also includes the broader study of money and other payment media used to resolve debts and the exchange of goods. Lacking a structured monetary system, people in the past lived in a barter society and used locally found items of inherent or implied value. A few people today still use bartering in absence of a monetary system. Early money used by people is referred to as "Odd and Curious", but the use of other goods in barter exchange is excluded, even where used as a circulating currency (e.g., cigarettes in prison). The Kyrgyz people used horses as the principal currency unit and gave small change in lambskins. The lambskins may be suitable for numismatic study, but the horse is not. Many objects have been used for centuries, such as cowry shells, precious metals and gems.

Today, most transactions take place by a form of payment with either inherent, standardized or credit value. Numismatic value may be used to refer to the value in excess of the monetary value conferred by law. This is also known as the "collector value." For example, a collector may be willing to pay far more than 50 cents for a U.S. half dollar coin, given their low circulation.

Economic and historical studies of money's use and development are an integral part of the numismatists' study of money's physical embodiment.

This is regarding Numismatics?
Q. I have a come across a Coin of Sierra Leone for One Leone carrying Face of Dr Siaka Stevens on one side & Bank of Sierra Leone10th Anniversary 1964-1974 on the other. Pls note that the spacing between Leone & 10th is not there in the Coin. Is this a minting error or is the coin a fake? Are there web sites for free appraisals of Coins as these as also to comment on the Authenticity of such coins?

A. This is a difficult question to answer without seeing the coin. Can you take a picture of it? It probably would be better to look in The Yellow Pages under "Buying & Selling of Coins".

is it legal to trade or ask for coins from other countries?
Q. thing is i am interested in numismatics (coin collection). i have quite a few collection of coins from my own country as well as many other countries. and i want to increase my collection. so i was wondering if i can ask people from other countries online (say through blog) to share or exchange their coins with me. or may be even buy or sell coins if possible. (by the way how do i determine prices of an ancient coin from a foreign land?)

A. Yes, it's absolutely fine to trade coins with other collectors from all over the world. Many have done so, from the US, Europe, etc. But also depends on where you live. To be safe, please check with your local Post first if there're any regulations forbidding sending of numismatic items. There're lots of online clubs and websites of internet coin collectors around if you want to exchange coins. But there're a few things you need to keep in mind before you set off for an online swap. I answered a question of similar nature sometime ago, read it here: As for the ancient coin sub-question, you need to refer to coin books, or look up the internet for such an item on sale. Ancient coins are not my specialty, so I can't be of much help here.… [cont.]

high-end rare coins, recession, value preservation?
Q. of course having gold or silver coins provides an advantage over the face value of the coins based on the cost of bullion. and of course better condition will command a slightly better price. i'm wondering if high-end numismatics are going to plummet too or if they would retain their premium. i imagine that if there are less people willing or able to purchase coins their prices must go down, yet i'm also wondering if, other than accummulating lots of metal, if truly collectible coins are better than, say, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc. i guess i'm not so much looking for an answer as much as discussion.

A. I can tell you that, over the past year, I have noticed that high-end, premium Morgan Dollars are not fetching the same price that they did on eBay. It that a fool-proof indicator? No, but it is a clear sign that the opposite is not happening; people are not flocking in to buy them which would drive the prices up. Obviously, they are out-performing the sub-7000 DOW, but at this point, I would say these investment grade coins are not immune to falling prices due to a flailing economy.
