Would anyone else enjoy a category for Antiques/Collectibles?
Q. Most such questions are posted under Society and Culture, but I would love to see them in a category of their own. Then, "Collectibles" would have several headings, for 'sport', 'transportation, 'antiques general', 'maritime', 'military', 'glass', 'coins', etc. I could see a problem with it generating classified ads, but that happens in other categories already. Hint--hint. Y!A staff notices questions with stars..

A. Hi ebay isn't the only source out there...Google Base is great! - Free ads which remain searchable for thirty days, easy photo uploads and results! Yahoo Classifieds are also free. There are many other internet auction sites too, do a search...there are also many internet stores which consign items. We do at www.maryantiques.com Good Luck!!!

Q. I am not talking about credit card sales here. I only accept cash and its equivalent forms ( i e, money orders / paypal ). People have money, you dorks! Sorry to burst your bubble, but the folks that are buying from me are from all walks of life, not just the rich! You people are so sad. You don't have any real answers, do ya? And for "sargeloda", these are not my family heirlooms. They are items I buy at yard sales and auctions, you ignoramus!

A. Bob, what kind of antiques? There are many sites that specialize in different antiques. I would definitely research the value before putting them on eBay because you would hate to undervalue something when it's worth a lot more! I can recommend a few sites to go to and a few Yahoo groups that can help in your reasearch. Give me a yell :)

A. The most respectable place would be Christie's auction house or Sothesby's thought I think they merged in some business matters not long ago. You can check them online too.

Is there anyone or place that would appraise approx. value on a bunch of collectibles and antiques I have?
Q. mostly canning jars, old books, glassware, bottles
Asked by bs75flh - Mon Sep 29 11:29:46 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That's a service that is valuable. You can take them to an appraiser or an auction house to get the value. Or, you can do the research yourself. Type each item into a search engine and loook at other sites where the same thing is for sale. Use the Ebay "completed items" function on the left hand side of the page. Jars, bottles and books are cool, but they're not rare so they don't bring in much money. .

Q. Hello All, My grandfather has recently passed away. He used to collect all kinds of antiques (mostly black memorabilia) and they have all been passed down to me. I currentley have three cigar store indians that I am trying to find buyers for. I have tried Ebay, Criag's List, Collectors, Auction Houses... I dont know what else to do. Please let me know if you know anyone (collectors, friends, dealers, etc.) who would be interested in speaking wtih me about these antiques. Thanks in advance!

A. Hello, I am very interested in knowing more about your cigar store Indians. If you can send me some pictures I will be able to give you a better idea of their value and or if I am interested in purchasing. I travel around this country buying and selling antiques such as Folk Art and Americana. I have been in business for 20 years and I am 38 years old. I am very professional and worked with many auction houses in Pa. and N.Y.C. If you do not care how much they are worth or what they sell for then auction is they way to go. I would be able to purchase these Indians at any level of value and would also be able to make a special trip to see them in person regardless of the outrageous price of fuel. I will show comparisons of value upon… [cont.]

A. I have been looking for old mexican clay pottery and have found a few pieces. I have collected and bought and sold different collectibles for years, but not really a lot on E Bay. I work with antique dealers in most cases. E Bay doesn't seem to be what I can use that much.

Have you ever had an antique/collectible appraiser come to your home?
Q. Have heard they can cost around $200, do a walk-through and you should have everything out to see. I don't really know where to start in picking one, except the phone book. I also know that if they offer to buy anything, they should be told to leave, and that this is unethical. I love details--Thanks!! ;-)
Asked by marylb - Mon Feb 18 12:22:50 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you need it for insurance reasons, I go with what the other answer says about contacting your insurance guy. If you want to sell your items, really, I don't think an appraiser anymore does that much good. To me, that is kind of a waste of money, unless you know firsthand they are reputable and good. Really, the online marketplace has changed the face of antique and collectibles so much, that doing your own online searches and getting up to the minute pricing is the way to go.
