Australia ( / ə ˈ s t r eɪ l j ə / ə-STRAYL-yə or / ɒ ˈ s t r eɪ l j ə / o-STRAYL-yə, or / ɔː ˈ s t r eɪ l i ə / aw-STRAY-lee-ə), officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent (the world's smallest), the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia to the northeast and New Zealand to the southeast. For at least 40,000 years before European settlement in the late 18th century, Australia was inhabited by indigenous Australians, who belonged to one or more of the roughly 250 language groups. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the immediate north and discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606, Australia's eastern half was claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales, founded on 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in the following years; the continent was explored and an additional five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established during the 19th century. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since Federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and is a Commonwealth realm. The population is 22 million, with approximately 60% concentrated in and around the mainland state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. The nation's capital city is Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory. A prosperous developed country, Australia is the world's thirteenth largest economy. Australia ranks highly in many international comparisons of national performance such as human development, quality of life, health care, life expectancy, public education, economic freedom and the protection of civil liberties and political rights. Australia is a member of the United Nations, G20, Commonwealth of Nations, ANZUS, OECD, APEC, Pacific Islands Forum and the World Trade Organization. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Has anyone in Australia built a house on a basement foundation? I can't find any information on how to do it. Q. I am planning on building a New England style home in approx. 2 - 3 years and would like a basement foundation. I have just started researching all my building options but am having a hard time finding any relevant information about basements from Australia. I know they aren't common but I didn't think they would be non-existent... Any advice/help would be appreciated. Asked by Craftygal - Thu Mar 20 08:36:31 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Assuming that you mean a house with a cellar or sub basement / rumpus room type under the main dwelling... Then I would be surprised if you would find any information in general about this type of structure since every situation is different... and has to be designed by a engineer ( 0r Myself )... Structures with special foundations are designed and built by professional Building Contractors in Australia... As each design is completely reliant on the sites position, slope, soil/clay structure, height, loadings , spans etc... Any generalisation of guidelines would be somewhat " inappropriate "...You should talk to a Reputable Builder when you have the site ( land ) chosen...and a basic idea of what you want...in mind.… [cont.] Answered by orgasmictomato - Fri Mar 21 16:43:12 2008 Who else thinks the continent of Australia should be changed? Q. It's rather misleading to consider Australia a continent of its own. If that were to be the case, what continent would New Zealand, Indonesia, and the numerous Polynesian Islands be considered a part of? Besides Indonesia, the other islands are clearly NOT part of Asia. So therefore, I propose that Australia and all these other countries be grouped into one continent: Oceania (the geographical term for these islands). Anyone care to comment? Q. I want to visit most of Australia, however it will most likely be the southern part of AU. Asked by Mandy - Mon May 25 20:50:53 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you're coming on a Work and Holiday visa, you will be expected to have at least AUD$5000 plus either a return air ticket or the funds to buy one. That's so that you have enough to live on until you can find work and to survive on during periods of unemployment. If you're coming on a tourist visa, you will be expected to have more than that, but how much more will depend on how long you'll be staying and how much travelling you intend doing. Immigration will insist that you have enough to live on for the entire time without being tempted to work illegally. Accommodation will be your major expense so staying in dorms in backpacker hostels is the way to go to keep those costs to a minimum. We have a huge network of hostels and they're… [cont.] Answered by Ozmaniac - Tue May 26 01:38:45 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "australia" Crowe to stay put in Australia - TVNZ
