In education
- Grade (education) Grades are standardized measurements of varying levels of comprehension within a subject area. Grades can be assigned in letters , as a range (for example 4.0 - 1.0), as descriptors (excellent, great, satisfactory, needs improvement), in percentages, or, as is common in some post-secondary institutions in some countries, as a Grade Point Average (, a teacher's evaluation of a student's performance
- Educational stages Most people are educated through a series of educational stages, such as primary school and university. They vary around the world, and not every person will attend the same stages. Some countries describe the different stages in years, whereas other countries use a system of grades, also called grade level, the numbering of the year a student has reached in school
- Grade (music), a method of formally assessing the accomplishments of pupils learning musical instruments
In civil engineering
- Grade (slope) The grade of any physical feature such as a hill, stream, roof, railroad, road, or aqueduct refers to the amount of inclination of that surface where zero indicates level (with respect to gravity) and larger numbers indicate higher degrees of "tilt". Often slope is calculated as a ratio of "rise over run" in which run is the, the pitch of a slope such as a hill, road or railway
- Land grading Grading in civil engineering and construction is the work of ensuring a level base for a construction work such as a foundation or the base course for a road or a railway. The earthworks created for such a purpose are often called the sub-grade (see diagram), the preparation and levelling of land for construction, especially of roads and railways
- Grade separation Grade separation is the process of aligning a junction of two or more transport axes at different heights so that they will not disrupt the traffic flow on other transit routes when they cross each other. The composition of such transport axes does not have to be uniform; it can consist of a mixture of roads, footpaths, railways, canals, or, aligning a junction of two or more transport axes at different heights to facilitate traffic flow.
In pure mathematics
- Graded vector space, a vector space with an extra piece of structure
- Graded algebra In mathematics, in particular abstract algebra, a graded algebra is an algebra over a field with an extra piece of structure, known as a gradation (or grading), an algebra over a field (or ring) with an extra piece of structure
In measurement and quality assessment and control
- Grad (angle) The grad is a unit of plane angle, equivalent to 1⁄400 of a full circle, dividing a right angle in 100. It is also known as gon, grade, or gradian (not to be confused with the grade of an inclined surface , the gradient in vector calculus, or the radian unit). One grad equals 9⁄10 of a degree or π⁄200 of a radian. In continental Europe, the, also called grade, a unit for the measurement of plane angles
- Ore grade, a measure that describes the concentration of a valuable natural material in the surrounding ore
- Grade (fasteners), the grade of nuts and bolts refers to the strength and material
- Cetane rating Cetane number or CN is a measurement of the combustion quality of diesel fuel during compression ignition. It is a significant expression of diesel fuel quality among a number of other measurements that determine overall diesel fuel quality, a measure of diesel fuel's combustion quality
- Octane rating The octane rating is a measure of the resistance of petrol and other fuels to autoignition in spark-ignition internal combustion engines, also called gasoline grade, the measure of the autoignition resistance of gasoline (petrol) and other fuels used in spark-ignition internal combustion engines
- Grading (tumors) In pathology, grading is a measure of the progress of tumors and other neoplasms. Some pathology grading systems apply only to malignant neoplasms ; others apply also to benign neoplasms. The neoplastic grading is a measure of cell anaplasia (lack of differentiation) in the sampled tumors arrising from the hyperplasia of normal tissue, a measure of the aggressiveness of a tumor in medicine
- Grade (climbing) In rock climbing, mountaineering and other climbing disciplines, climbers give a climbing grade to a route that concisely describes the difficulty and danger of climbing the route. Different aspects of climbing each have their own grading system, and many different nationalities developed their own, distinctive grading systems, a climber's assessment of the difficulty and danger of climbing a hill
- Grade (bouldering) In the sport of bouldering, problems are assigned technical grades according to several established systems, which are often distinct from those used in roped climbing. Bouldering grade systems in wide use include the Hueco "V" grades , Fontainebleau technical grades, route colors, Peak District grades, and British technical grades, a climber's assessment of the difficulty and danger of climbing a route which are distinct from those used in regular climbing
- International Scale of River Difficulty The International Scale of River Difficulty is a standardized scale used to rate the safety of a stretch of river, or a single rapid. The grade reflects the technical difficulty and skill level required associated with the section of river, also called grade, a standardized scale used to rate the safety of a stretch of river, or a single rapid A rapid is a section of a river where the river bed has a relatively steep gradient causing an increase in water velocity and turbulence. A rapid is a hydrological feature between a run and a cascade. A rapid is characterised by the river becoming shallower and having some rocks exposed above the flow surface. As flowing water splashes over and.
- Grade of service In telecommunication engineering, and in particular teletraffic engineering, the quality of voice service is specified by two measures: the grade of service and the quality of service (QoS), the quality of voice service in telecommunications
- Coin grading, the process of determining the grade or condition of a coin, the key factor in its value
- Color grading Color grading is the process of altering and enhancing the color of a motion picture or television image, either electronically, photo-chemically or digitally. The photo-chemical process is also referred to as color timing and is typically performed at a photographic laboratory. Modern color correction, whether for theatrical film or video, the process of altering and enhancing the color of a motion picture or television image
- Pattern grading Pattern grading is the scaling of a pattern to a different size by incrementing important points of the pattern using an algorithm in the clothing and footwear industry, the scaling of a pattern to a different size in the clothing or footwear industry
In Medicine
- Grading In pathology, grading is a measure of the progress of tumors and other neoplasms. Some pathology grading systems apply only to malignant neoplasms ; others apply also to benign neoplasms. The neoplastic grading is a measure of cell anaplasia (lack of differentiation) in the sampled tumors arrising from the hyperplasia of normal tissue, a measure of the progress of tumors A tumor or tumour is the name for a neoplasm or a solid lesion formed by an abnormal growth of cells which looks like a swelling. Tumor is not synonymous with cancer. A tumor can be benign, pre-malignant or malignant, whereas cancer is by definition malignant and other neoplasms Neoplasm is an abnormal mass of tissue as a result of neoplasia. Neoplasia is the abnormal proliferation of cells. The growth of the cells exceeds, and is uncoordinated with that of the normal tissues around it. The growth persists in the same excessive manner even after cessation of the stimuli. It usually causes a lump or tumor. Neoplasms may be

- Evolutionary grade In alpha taxonomy, a grade refers to a level of morphological and/or physiological complexity. Organisms may be grouped by the grade of organisation they display without making any implications about their phylogenetic relationship. Due to convergent evolution, most grades contain organisms of differing descent, and are thus polyphyletic, a paraphyletic group of organisms

Do you favor or oppose a college that has grading system with letter grades of without pluses and minuses?
Q. Or do you don't care much about it? A community college called Skyline College in CA has grading system without plus and minuses for letter grades. For example, an A-minus would appear as an A in this community college. But I know lots of colleges use pluses and minuses. But I don't think all campuses would use them.

A. Once you get out of school, whether your grade was a "minus" or a "plus" doesn't really matter. The idea is to do the best you can to learn and process and retain the material.
